Making a sham of democracy
Gen. Musharaff ordered the arrests of opposition leaders in Pakistan today in order to curb their ascention to power. This action is a fatal blow to Pakistani democracy. Politicians of the opposition were rounded up in police raids. They were planning on leading demonstrations this week against Musharraf's re-election plans.

Imran Khan, the cricketer turned politician, warned that democratic process has broken down in Pakistan."This is descending into a complete banana republic," he said in an interview. "Whatever obstacles come into Musharraf's way, he is determined to remove them. And all for one reason: to stay in power," he said.
